The Arizona desert. Home to 20 million rattlesnakes, Scattered F-16 parts, and lizards the size of beagles. All baked to a crisp 130 degrees. It's the kind of wide open desolation that makes people think twice before shutting off the car. And a place where a cold beer is pretty damned important. Read More
Just because a beer is dark it doesn't always have a dark flavour that some beer drinkers have not aquired a taste for. Such is the case with Lost Duck Brewing Company American Black Duck Lager. (Fort Madison Iowa) Compared to the darker beers Porter and Oatmeal Stout, this beer is light. It's a schwarz beer and dark in nature but the finish is very smooth and does not linger like the stouts and porters. Read More

I’m generally in favor of a free market. I’m glad commodity prices are good — farmers need a chance to make a little money. I don’t even mind so much that gas is over $3.00 per gallon — should spur the American public to get behind serious efforts to develop an alternative energy source.
But when high grain prices affect the price of my Friday afternoon pizza and beer, perhaps we’ve gone too far in our re-structuring of the agricultural industry.
It’s been widely reported that wheat is in short supply and prices are artificially erratic and they are high ($25 per bushel on the Minneapolis Grain Board). Wheat stocks are lower than any time since the post WWII days — and going down. Read Article
Most light beers tend to taste like water to me, especially domestic brews. Hand Crafted beer generally has a full body to it even though it is light in color. Lost Duck Canvasback Blond Lager is a flavorful light beer with a nice finish in the hop. This arward winning beer has been around since 2004 and has drawn so much attention that it is a signature brew at the brewerey.

The time I spent on the west coast and in northern Nevada gave me the opportunity to sample some of the original fruit flavor microbrews. There was a range from Raspberry to Apricot and some other berry flavors.
I recently tried a Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat that I found particulary flavorful and sweet enough to really make it an easy beer to drink. There is a limit though just like with most sweet beers. Once you reach that point you lose the true beer taste. I think it's a good dinner beer though, as long as it is pared correctly.

The first time I tasted a smoked beer I discovered that there was once again another element of flavor that would embeded into my taste buds. Alaskan Smoked Porter has a great smoked flavor that almost conjures up visions of BBQ in the backyard. Rich smokey taste that hangs in there. I haven't seen to many breweries that have a smoked beer on tap unless it is a seasonal beer, so you may have to search a little to get a taste of the goods.
Millstream Brewing Company of Amana Iowa have a great selection of hand crafted beer. One in particular that I like is thier Oatmeal Stout. It's a rich and creamy stout that has a slight sweetness to it on the finish. While it isn't a Guiness it does measure up as one of the better stouts in the hand crafted catagory. Meiers Den located in Fort Madison Iowa is a wine tasting bar and is one of the few that also carry Millstream brews. Four in total and one hard apple cidar. Meiers Den also has a full kitchen menu as well as many Iowa produced wines
